Castoreum

Castoreum is a unique and animalic note that lends a deep, leathery, and slightly smoky aroma to perfumes. With rich, musky undertones and hints of wood and warmth, castoreum brings an unmistakable complexity and boldness to fragrances. It is commonly used as a base note, adding an opulent and long-lasting character to compositions. Castoreum’s distinctive scent pairs well with resins, spices, and woods, creating luxurious and sophisticated fragrances with a touch of rugged sensuality.

History & Production: Traditionally, castoreum is derived from the secretion of castor sacs found in beavers, particularly in North America and Europe. The substance was historically collected for use in medicine and perfumery. However, due to ethical and animal welfare concerns, the use of natural castoreum has diminished, and synthetic alternatives have become common. The genuine extraction process involved drying and tincturing the sacs to produce the raw material, which imparts its signature leathery and animalic scent. Today, most perfumers use synthesized castoreum to replicate its complex aroma while ensuring sustainability and ethical practices in fragrance creation.
