Iris Root/Orris
Iris root, also known as orris, is a luxurious and highly prized note in perfumery, renowned for its soft, powdery, and slightly woody aroma. With subtle hints of violet and an earthy warmth, orris exudes sophistication and elegance, adding a unique depth to fragrances. Often used as a base or heart note, it lends a smooth, velvety texture to perfumes. Its delicate, floral character enhances blends with florals, woods, and resins, creating refined and long-lasting compositions.
History & Production: The finest orris is derived from the rhizomes of the Iris pallida, Iris germanica, or Iris florentina plants, traditionally cultivated in regions like Italy and Morocco. The production process is extensive and time-consuming; the roots are harvested, peeled, and dried for up to five years to develop their distinctive scent. After this aging period, the roots are steam-distilled or solvent-extracted to produce the precious orris butter. This meticulous process, along with its low yield, makes orris one of the most expensive and coveted materials in the perfume industry, valued for its elegant and powdery scent that enriches fine fragrances.
