Iris Root/Orris (Florentine/Tuscany)

Iris root, also known as orris, is a luxurious and highly prized fragrance note with a soft, powdery, and slightly earthy scent profile that carries subtle floral and woody undertones. Its aroma is refined, smooth, and elegant, adding a sense of opulence and timeless beauty to perfumes. Florentine orris imparts a powdery, velvety character and is often used as a heart or base note to create depth and sophistication in fragrance compositions. It pairs beautifully with florals, woods, and amber, contributing to fragrances that are warm, complex, and captivating.

History & Production: Iris root from Florence and Tuscany, primarily derived from Iris pallida, is among the most cherished sources of orris in perfumery. The production process is lengthy and intricate; the rhizomes of the iris plant are harvested, dried, and aged for three to five years to develop their characteristic scent. After aging, the rhizomes are processed through steam distillation or solvent extraction to produce the rich, aromatic butter. In modern perfumery, Florentine orris is highly valued for its luxurious, powdery depth that enhances the complexity and sophistication of fragrances, making them feel timeless and elegant.
